chapter5 —->Fun With the mouse

Move the mouse cursor – The primary function is to move the mouse pointer on the screen. The 360° scroll ball also you to move not only up and down on a page but also side-to-side and diagonally to view the whole document or webpage if it does not fit all on the given area. This resource will explain the functions of different buttons on Windows and Apple computer mice.

Bill English, builder of Engelbart’s original mouse, created a ball mouse in 1972 while working for Xerox PARC. The plural for the small rodent is always “mice” in modern usage. The plural for a computer mouse is either “mice” or “mouses” according to most dictionaries, with “mice” being more common. The first recorded plural usage is “mice”; the online Oxford Dictionaries cites a 1984 use, and earlier uses include J.

It is used when some information is available on paper and it is to be transferred to the hard disk of the computer for further manipulation. When the tip of a light pen is moved over the monitor screen and the pen button is pressed, its photocell sensing element detects the screen location and sends the corresponding signal to the CPU. Generally, it consists of a set of 17 keys that are laid out in the same configuration used by most adding machines and calculators. A button is a command that performs a specific function within an application. The most commonly used commands in a program will be represented by buttons. Icons are used to represent the different files, applications, and commands on your computer.

If the i-beam cursor is over a place that you can insert text, then you first have to click the mouse once so that a single vertical bar appears to allow typing. The vertical bar will flash to let you know that you can begin typing. A mouse is used to point at objects you see on the screen. By pointing at an object, you tell the computer that you want to do something with that object.

It is seamless and does not operate via buttons but through a chip. Right-clicking usually displays a list of things you can do with a selected item. You don’t want to hang on to the mouse too tightly or click with a lot of force. Keep your fingers relaxed, and keep the mouse at elbow level. If your fingers become tired, take breaks from the computer.

Douglas Engelbart of the Stanford Research Institute has been credited in published books by Thierry Bardini, Paul Ceruzzi, Howard Rheingold, and several others as the inventor of the computer mouse. Engelbart was also recognized as such in various obituary titles after his death in July 2013. Another early trackball was built by Kenyon Taylor, a British electrical engineer working in collaboration with Tom Cranston and Fred Longstaff. Taylor was part of the original Ferranti Canada, working on the Royal Canadian Navy’s DATAR system in 1952. When talking about one , refer to a computer mouse as a “mouse.” When talking about two or more , refer to them as “mice” , or “mouses.” To change the batteries in your mouse, you slide back the cover on the bottom, switch out the old batteries, and then replace the cover.
